"The Bannister" is a short non-fiction prose piece written by myself. Based on an incident from my childhood, the piece reflects on harsh upbringings, while dramatizing the helplessness and fear that a child experiences during a traumatic moment.

Extremely personal to me, the piece taught me how to communicate to an audience internal feelings through the senses.

I had to face some tough issues to create this work. Writing it forced me to go back to a hard time in my life and reflect upon it. It was an emotional experience, but a therapeutic one.

Due to the emotional process of writing this story, the end result is honest, sincere, and poignant.
